Guilt

As Priya sat in the hospital room, watching her mother take her last breath, she couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with guilt. She had always known that her mother was sick, but she had never fully grasped the gravity of the situation. She had always thought there would be more time, more time to spend together, more time to make amends.

But now it was too late. Now her mother was gone, and Priya was left with a lifetime of regrets.

“I’m sorry, Ma,” Priya whispered, her tears falling onto her mother’s hand. “I’m sorry for all the times I was selfish and ungrateful. I’m sorry for all the times I took you for granted. I’m sorry for not being there more for you.”

She knew she couldn’t bring her mother back, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that she could have done more, could have been a better daughter. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she had let her mother down.

“I promise I’ll be a better person,” Priya said, her voice shaking. “I promise I’ll make you proud. I promise I’ll never forget you.”

But as the reality of the situation sank in, Priya knew that she would never be able to fully forgive herself. She would always carry the weight of her guilt with her, always wonder what could have been.
