Gilli Danda: A Game That Taught Me About Teamwork, Sportsmanship, and Perseverance

Gilli Danda is a traditional Indian game that is played with two sticks. The game is popular in rural areas of India, and it is a great way for kids to get exercise and have fun.

I grew up in rural Bihar in the 1990s, and Gilli Danda was one of my favorite games. We would play it all the time, and it was a great way to make friends and stay active.

The game is simple to play. One player holds the longer stick, called the danda, and the other player holds the shorter stick, called the gilli. The goal of the game is to hit the gilli with the danda and send it flying. The player who hits the gilli the farthest wins the point.

We would often play Gilli Danda in the open field behind our house. We would make a small circle in the ground and place the gilli inside the circle. The player with the danda would then try to hit the gilli out of the circle.

If the player hit the gilli out of the circle, they would get a point. The first player to reach 10 points would win the game.

Gilli Danda is a great game for kids of all ages. It is a fun way to get exercise and have fun with friends. If you are looking for a new game to play, I encourage you to give Gilli Danda a try.

Here are some of my personal experiences of playing Gilli Danda as a girl growing up in rural Bihar in the 90s:

  • I remember the first time I played Gilli Danda. I was about 6 years old, and I was playing with my friends in the open field behind our house. We had a lot of fun, and I was hooked from the very first time I played.
  • I also remember the time I hit the gilli so far that it landed in the neighbor’s yard. The neighbor’s dog came running out and started barking at me, but I didn’t care. I was so proud of myself for hitting the gilli so far.
  • I also remember the time I lost a game of Gilli Danda to my older brother. I was so upset, but he just laughed at me and told me to get better.

Gilli Danda is a game that I will always cherish. It is a game that taught me about teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance. It is a game that I will always remember fondly.
